Celebrations for the Saint Patron Saint Biagio in Maratea in May
For the anniversary of his Saint Patron Saint Biagio, Maratea in May fills up and heats up: there are many events scheduled in the city for the celebrations from the early hours of Thursday that precedes the second Sunday of May each year.
In May, celebrations start with the procession which, on Thursday, brings the statue of San Biagio from the homonymous Sanctuary, at the foot of Christ statue, to the center of Maratea, accompanied by the praying crowd. The statue of San Biagio, covered by a characteristic purple red cloth, is then discovered, symbolizing traditionally the reception by the religious authorities and the mayor who offers them the keys of the city of Maratea.
The celebrations, which are a unique event that attracts faithful and curious from all over Italy and brings together the entire citizenship of Maratea, continue on Saturday with the procession of San Biagio along the characteristic streets of the Historical Center of Maratea and end on Sunday, when the statue of the Saint is brought back to the Sanctuary of San Biagio.
The celebrations continue throughout the city center with lights, concerts and typical outdoor stalls with traditional local products: it is certainly a characteristic event to attend in Maratea in May.
